SENIOR MANAGER, BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT  (Technology, Media and Telecommunications)

Fasken’s Business Development team has an immediate opening for a hands-on, results-oriented, experienced professional. As the Business Development Manager, the successful candidate will enjoy a highly visible position providing marketing and business development support for the firm’s Technology, Media and Telecommunications group including the support for key growth areas including emerging technology and venture capital, AI, Data, Video Games and IT.

The Manager will work with lawyers across our international offices to develop and execute a strategic business plan, providing thought leadership and executing on targeted marketing methods including effective client events, worthwhile organizational affiliations and sponsorships, cross-practice initiatives, and other projects.

This role will work collaboratively with the rest of the Business Development team as well as the Firm’s Marketing and Communications groups. It has minimal direction and is required to exercise strong initiative, and sound judgment and the utmost professionalism expected for a Tier 1 law Firm.

Primary Responsibilities:

Project and Operational Management

·         Driving practice management efficiency. This can include consulting and implementing a budget approval/tracking process, assessing and roll out of a matter tagging education program, and implementation of other tracking and measurement tools.

·         Set up regular meetings, take notes and action items, following up with appropriate teams to keep on task.

·         Work with multiple internal stakeholders to assess timelines and track progress of key initiatives, reporting back regularly to group leadership.

·         Help ensure marketing/pitch materials are kept updated for use in business development meetings/trips with prospects. Track and provide monthly updates detailing business development activity and successes (win/loss ratios, referrals, return on networking investments, upcoming activities).

Client Development

·         Maximizes the assigned Practice Group’s ability to secure new business by identifying and evaluating new business opportunities and targets, facilitating cross selling initiatives in conjunction with Regional Teams and mining of campaign data for business development opportunities.

·         Provides support to strategic RFP/RFI/proposal/pitch opportunities; including working with the Pricing & Innovation teams to develop alternative fee arrangement proposals and other innovative products.

·         Develops ideas for discussion with our client Relationship Partners, with a view to further develop our relationship with individual clients and identifying business opportunities.

·         Supports lawyers to prepare them for business development meetings/trips with prospects, including identification of client targets/prospects, preparing appropriate plan materials, as well as client and market intelligence. 

Profiling and Market intelligence

·         Help collect and maintain a list of relevant experience items.

·         Work closely with content strategist to assess how to grow Fasken’s share of voice in identified areas, collaborating on thought leadership and social media strategy.

·         Maintains a strong knowledge of key clients and market forces, including business trends and competitive landscape.

·         Experience Management: Maintain various department/practice group/industry experience lists, deal lists and case studies. Collaborate with other marketing team members on the submission of relevant directory submissions.

Team Management

·         Oversee 1-2 direct reports through coaching, mentoring, delegation, and supervision.

Required Knowledge and Experience

·         5 years of experience in marketing or professional services business development in a technology-related field is essential. A strong preference for candidates with legal or other professional services related Firm experience.

·         Experience working in large/matrix organizations, managing multiple stakeholder requirements

·         Bachelor's degree in a related field required, and/or MBA preferred

·         Solid working knowledge of core marketing principles including driving innovative tools and programs, competitive intelligence, market research, and pitch and RFP responses.



This role reports to the Sr Director, Business Development.
